Companionship
We provide companionship based on your preferences. If you need assistance to maintain activities, hobbies or other interests, our professional caregivers are available to help you enjoy life as you always have; reading, walking, attending performances and social events, or other leisure activities. Staying connected with your community and being active is one of the best ways to remain happy and healthy in your own home.
We pride ourselves on working with seniors and their families to identify activities that they enjoy and yet need some support to do. Our services are “person-centered” meaning that you direct your care and make decisions about your life. You may already have social networks or activities established which we can help you maintain. You may have interests for which you have no connection in which case we can help you establish relationships and networks in your community around those interests. Back to Top
Personal Care For Seniors
We provide assistance with daily living activities like dressing, bathing, exercise, transfers from wheelchair, or other assistance for those who have limited mobility.
We can help you and your family assess what support your aging parent or loved one needs with personal care. You can start with these recommendations for making personal care easier and safer for your loved one:
Tips for modifying the homeInstall grab bars near toilets and tubs. Do not let your loved one rely on towel bars for support Buy a raised toilet seat, which makes sitting and getting up far easier. Attach a wall-mounted liquid soap dispenser in the shower so your loved one is not struggling to reach bars of soap. Install non-slip strips or rubber mats on the floor of the tub or shower Place non-slip strips or rubber-bottom bathmats on the bathroom floor. Keep a non-slip rug or runner, or rubber mat, in front of the kitchen sink where the floor is likely to be wet or slippery Avoid bath oils which make feet and hands slippery A shower curtain may be easier to manage than a glass door, but make sure it is hung on a secure rod that is screwed into the wall. If your parent slips a curtain on a screwed secured shower rod will offer better support. Tips to make dressing easierGo a size or two larger, which will help clothes go on easier and offer room for easy movement. If your love one has trouble balancing while dressing, consider clothing that can be put on while sitting, such as wraparound or pullover dresses. Elastic-waist pants are easier to get on than pants with zippers and buckles. There are a variety of gadgets on the market that can make dressing easier, such as metallic arms that help pull socks and pants on, devices that pull buttons through their holes, and extra-long shoehorns. Household Help for Seniors
We provide assistance with household maintenance tailored to your and your family’s style and preference. These services may include: meal preparation, feeding assistance, household chores, household organization and downsizing, safety analysis and accommodations, or other services that support you or your loved one to live a healthy, happy life at home.
How safe is your parent’s home?Stairways: Ensure loose steps and loose carpeting are secured, or remove carpeting all together. Put colored tape on the edge of every step so it is easy to see where each one ends. Good lighting is very important. Make sure that there are switches at the top and bottom of each staircase. Bath: Most household accidents occur in the bathroom. Install shower seats and handrails in tubs and by the toilet. The bottom of tubs should be line with non-skid mats or rubber strips. Check the water temperature and lower the setting to 115 degrees F. Bedroom: Make sure nightstands are within easy reach. Consider replacing lamps with ones that will not fall and that can be easily turned off from the bed. Install night-lights on the path from the bedroom to the bathroom. Kitchen: Place frequently used items on the lowest shelves in cabinets and the refrigerator. Alarms: Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your and your parent’s home. Look into getting your parent a personal response system, either a pendant or a bracelet. Back to Top |
Respite Care and Round
the Clock Home Care
We provide respite for existing caregivers in the family or community, based on your changing schedule. We can provide services daily, from as little as 2 hours at a time and up to twenty-four hour care- as frequently as you need.
All too often caregivers place their own needs last. Helping an older relative should not mean giving up all your other activities. You may even have your own children to care for. Taking breaks from care giving is essential for both full and part-time caregivers. You have a right, even a responsibility, to take time in order to care for yourself.
Services Alternatives Home Care providers are available as a one time only service or for as many days as you need us. We will always be there for you.
We have caring and dependable home caregivers available in Seattle/King County, Edmonds/Snohomish County, Mt Vernon/Skagit County, Bellingham/Whatcom County, Oak Harbor/Island County, and Tacoma/Pierce County.
Service Alternatives Home Care is licensed to provide twenty-four hour services when needed. These services are available for continuous care or for short term care.
Additionally, 24 hour phone consultation is always available to all of our clients and community members, free of charge. Back to Top

Money
Management and Finances
Why might someone need assistance with money and finances? With our fast paced society and growing senior population, we have an increasing need for a service that includes assistance for senior citizens with the management of their finances. Older adults living alone are often the targets of financial exploitation. In some cases, older adults are no longer able to manage their affairs due to health reasons. Service Alternatives, Inc. can provide assistance with managing personal finances. For those who need assistance in this area, we can help.
Our case managers and caregivers are able to assist you with budgeting, organizing, bill paying, checkbook balancing, and more. Getting help with these types of tasks often give seniors a sense of financial freedom and decreases economic stress.
The children of aging parents are often called upon to be physical caregivers as well as financial specialists. Managing finances and planning for a loved one’s future requires a fair amount of knowledge of budgeting, taxes, insurance, investing, and credit, not to mention Medicaid, wills and trusts. We can work with you to locate trusted resources in Western Washington to help and to answer your questions.
You might need help that is on-going or on a temporary basis. For example, a senior might need assistance organizing his or her finances during rehabilitation and no longer needs the service once he or she has recovered. We work with customers and their families to come up with individual management plans that outline our services, limitations and responsibilities. Service Alternatives, Inc. is a licensed, bonded and insured home care agency that has years of experience and a proven track record as representative payees for customers in Western Washington.
